I have a medical condition called ulcerative colitis, which gives me a range of various symptoms. Some of these symptoms restrict my ability to be mobile and I am stuck at home. I work for a company doing software where all of my job duties I’m able to do from home. This company I work for Was remote during the pandemic but now they required everyone to come into the office. Because of my health condition, I am not able to come in. I have the support from medical professionals saying that they recommend that I work from home due to my symptoms. My company is saying that I must come into work and that there are a come accommodation team said that my disability does not directly impact my work and therefore they cannot do anything for me. Do I have a legal case to push for remote work?
Hello ****. To provide more accurate information, could you please tell me in which country and state/province you're located? Laws regarding disability accommodations can vary greatly by location.

Hello ****,
Based on your location, you may be protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Michigan Persons with Disabilities Civil Rights Act. They require employers to make "reasonable accommodations" for employees with disabilities. You can file a complaint with the EEOC or Michigan Department of Civil Rights. However, please consult with a lawyer for specific advice.
my HR accommodation was them offering to put me near a toilet. Is this reasonable enough for me? Or can I still make a push for remote work?
The ADA requires accommodations to be "reasonable" and not cause "undue hardship" to the employer. Whether the accommodation of being near a toilet is reasonable depends on your specific circumstances. You may still push for remote work if it does not cause undue hardship to your employer. Consult with a lawyer for tailored advice.
What must be done for me to push for it? Because I already reached out and complained about the ruling.
To push for remote work, you should:
- Document your requests and responses.
- Provide medical documents supporting your claim.
- Consult a lawyer to guide you.
- File a claim with the EEOC or Michigan Department of Civil Rights if necessary.
Always consult a lawyer for tailored advice.
