Illinois Consumer Protection Laws

Summary

Illinois does not have a specific law requiring a one-year guarantee for durable goods. However, the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act protects consumers from unfair practices. If a product is sub-standard, you can file a complaint with the Illinois Attorney Generals Office or the Federal Trade Commission.

I bought an exhaust pipe/catalytic converter on ebay that should have lasted 10 years, but fell apart in * mos. The supplier and ebay won't make good on it and my bank (so fi) wouldn't take my money back. Ebay says that they could only act if the supplier violated any laws. Any ideas?
Hello Bernard, under the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act, you might have a case if you can prove:
- The product was falsely advertised
- The seller used deceptive practices
You could file a complaint with the Illinois Attorney General's Office.
There was no deception involved, it's just a sub-standard product that didn't perform as expected.
Hello Bernard, given your situation, you might consider filing a complaint with the Illinois Attorney General's Office or the Federal Trade Commission about the quality of the product. Despite no deception, sub-standard products can also be subject to complaints.
